What is Capoeira?

A martial art that looks like dancing — and feels like flying

Capoeira was born in Brazil, created by African slaves who hid their self-defense inside music and movement. Today it's one of the most unique art forms in the world — part fight, part dance, part game.

Two people enter a circle called the roda. Live music plays. And what happens next is a physical conversation — kicks and dodges, feints and flow — all in sync with the rhythm of the berimbau.

It's unlike anything you've tried before. And that's exactly why people fall in love with it.

Our Story

How Capoeira found its home in Pune

It started with a chance encounter. A visiting instructor — Monitor Atrasada — introduced Capoeira to Sagar right here in Pune. That first class changed everything.

Years of training under Mestre Caxias followed. And what began as one person's passion slowly became a community — kids, parents, young professionals, all drawn together by the same rhythm.

Today, Grupo Capoeira Brasil Pune is part of a global family spanning 40+ countries. But at its heart, it's still the same small circle of people who just love to move together.

Here's what to expect
when you walk in

Most people are a little nervous before their first class. That's completely normal. Here's what you'll actually find.

No experience needed. At all.
You don't need to be fit, flexible, or have any martial arts background. Everyone starts from zero. By the end of your first class, you'll wonder why you waited so long.

It's more fun than it looks.
Capoeira looks intense from the outside. But inside the roda, it's playful. There's laughing, music, and a whole lot of "wait, I actually did that?" moments.

Sagar has been practicing Capoeira for over 14 years and trained directly under Mestre Caxias. He started this community in Pune from scratch — one class, one student at a time. He's certified, passionate, and genuinely cares about every person who walks through the door.

Grupo Capoeira Brasil was founded in 1989 in Rio de Janeiro. Today it's one of the largest Capoeira organisations in the world — with groups in 40+ countries across six continents.

Every year, we host the Batizado — our annual grading ceremony — where students receive their cords and train alongside visiting mestres from around the world. It's one of the best days of the year, and everyone is welcome to be part of it.
